Pickleball Tip: When to Reset the Ball

October 16, 2024

In pickleball, there are key moments when hitting a reset shot is your best option. A reset is a defensive shot aimed at slowing down your opponent’s attack and allowing you time to regain control. The best times to reset are when you find yourself in one of the ‘Three O’s’—Off Balance, Out-Stretched, or Off Court.

If your opponent sends a low, fast shot to your feet, resist the temptation to swing hard. Instead, play a soft, controlled drop into the kitchen to neutralize their attack. This will give you a chance to regroup and extend the point. Resetting the ball is a smart strategy when you’re not in a strong position to counter-attack.
