MOUNT PLEASANT – One of the first-round matches of this year’s Australian Open featured No. 59 Martina Trevisan against No. 101 Renata Zarazua.
Those same two players faced off again on Monday in Mount Pleasant, S.C., at the Fifth Third Charleston WTA 125, highlighting the quality tennis on display.
“That was a match at the Grand Slam tournament, and that was our first round today,” said Patrick Hieber, tournament director and general manager for LTP Academy, a premier tennis academy hosting the event. “It shows you just how strong this tournament is.”
The outcome of Trevisan vs. Zarazua was the same as the Australian Open, with Trevisan winning in three sets.
Hieber also pointed to No. 88 Kayla Day facing off against No. 75 Aliaksandra Sasnovich as an example of the exceptional tennis on display. Day also lost in three sets.
The day’s biggest upset was No. 96 Rebeka Masarova beating No. 48 Arantxa Rus, who was the tournament’s No. 2 seed.
“These athletes are so talented that little things can make a big difference,” Hieber said.
LTP Academy players Usue Arconada and Maria Mateas both lost on Monday, leaving only one more LTP athlete, No. 171 Dalayna Hewitt, in the tournament. Hewitt will play her first-round main draw singles match against No. 74 Diana Shnaider on Tuesday.
